One of my assignments on Wednesday was to photograph R. Kelly walking out of the Criminal Courts Building during the lunch break from his child pornography trial.

In Illinois, photojournalists aren’t allowed to photograph in the courtroom so we are stuck outside waiting for the participants to walk in or out.

In the past, there have been some pretty ugly media scrums outside of the Dirksen Federal Building and the Criminal Courts Building, more commonly referred to as 26th and Cal.

Ever since former Illinois Governor George Ryan’s wife got knocked to the ground, the rules for media coverage have been tightened up.

At 26th and Cal, the media usually waits in a pen inside but with the extra interest in the R. Kelly trial, the media is penned outside the main entrance.

Yesterday, was the first day that I have been assigned to the trial so like I do in most cases when I am trying to make a boring scene interesting, I pull out one of my well worn photo tricks. In this case, it was the silhouette.
